Today, the Federal Government has announced a $40,000 grant to the Goorambat Veterans' Retreat under the Supporting Younger Veterans Grants Program. The announcement came via Mr Ross Lyman - Liberal candidate for Indi.
Mr Lyman said "This will see the refurbishment of the Veteran Meeting Room and Practical Activity Annex. As a younger veteran myself, I know how important support like this is, something I hold close to my heart and am incredibly passionate about. "
The Goorambat Veterans Retreat Inc (GVR) provides Veteran support services, including wellbeing and compensation advocacy, short term crisis accommodation, and facilities to support activities that improve the health and well-being of the young veterans and their families.
Phil Thomson, chairman of GVR said "This grant award is very timely and most welcome. These funds will be put to work promptly to refurbish an old school classroom into an accessible shared communal space for young veterans to regularly meet and participate in group activities and workshops to help them connect. Our aim is to host treatment programs and workshops for young veterans in this space.
These pictures show the project start-point, from when the old Goorambat Primary School property was acquired in 2019 and before the refurbishment of the proposed activity room commences.
The Goorambat Primary School sat vacant for almost 10 years.
As the boards were removed its potential to be repurposed became evident.
This former classroom space will be transformed into a new accessible, shared communal space for young veterans to regularly meet and participate in group activities and workshops.
